The lot is the batch offered for inspection at one time, from one production run, under one set of conditions. For PCBA, a common error is treating the whole order as one lot when it ships in weekly batches — or treating each carton as a separate lot, which inflates the sample size and can reject statistically fine production. Define the lot in the quality agreement: e.g., "each production batch of the same part number produced in one day, not exceeding 5,000 units."
Inspection Level — General II Is the Default for Good Reason
ISO 2859-1 defines General Inspection Levels I, II, and III, plus Special Levels S-1 through S-4. Level II is the default for most electronics because it balances sample size and protection. Level I halves the sample for low-risk incoming inspection; Level III doubles it for high-value or high-risk product. The special levels are for destructive or costly tests (S-1 is the smallest) — used for solder joint cross-sectioning, not for visual inspection.
Defect Classes — Critical, Major, Minor

For a lot of 3,200 PCBA boards at General Inspection Level II, the code letter is K. The code letter is the only bridge between lot size and sample size — it is looked up in Table A (sample size code letters), not guessed.
Step 2 — Find the Sample Size and Accept/Reject Numbers (Table B)
Code letter K gives a sample size of 125 boards. With AQL 1.0 for majors, Table B shows Ac = 3, Re = 4: inspect 125 boards, accept if 3 or fewer major defects are found, reject if 4 or more. With AQL 1.5 for minors, the same sample size shows Ac = 5, Re = 6. Critical defects are always Ac = 0, Re = 1 regardless of sample size.
Step 3 — Apply the Rule per Defect Class, Not Combined
Each defect class has its own accept/reject number. You do not sum majors and minors. A lot with 3 major defects and 5 minor defects is accepted on majors (Ac = 3) and rejected on minors (Ac = 5, Re = 6 → 5 is still within Ac). If it had 6 minors, the lot is rejected even though majors passed.

A workable quality clause reads: "Inspection per ISO 2859-1, General Inspection Level II. Compare that to "AQL 1.0" — the difference is the difference between an enforceable contract and a dispute.
